Perceptual binding is the binding of features (i.e., letter identities and position) to form perceptual units. During word recognition, do people bind features together early in perceptual processing, and, if so, are those features later integrated in a perceptual unit together? Does a change in binding pattern occur across the course of reading? We tested these questions by measuring listeners' ability to identify words as quickly as possible. Subjects saw a sequence of pseudowords consisting of target letter pairs that were either congruent or incongruent. The congruency of the pairings was varied from trial to trial. Accuracy and response time were the dependent measures. Incongruent word pairs were processed more slowly than congruent word pairs, indicating that incongruent pairs were more difficult to perceive than congruent pairs. However, no decrease in accuracy was seen with increasing conflict strength. In addition, no difference in the size of the effect was seen between the first and second halves of the study. The finding that features do not undergo perceptual binding within a single word or across the first half of the word suggests that feature binding is not the primary mechanism that underlies serial word recognition./*
